Jon K Moved to Manchester in 1994 and became involved in DJing at House/Free parties as well as various Bar residencies. This lead on to being offered a Residency at the Notorious Mcr Hip Hop jam - Subtub, the Petri dish that spawned the Broke'N'English Family and the Players/Estate record Labels as well as Playing alongside DJs such as Q-Bert & Rob swift and Live acts such as Jeru tha Damaja, All Natural & RSL. Recent times has seen him working behind the counter at Manchester's Fat City records as well as holding residency at their Friends and Family club night which has hosted guests such as DJ Spinna Madlib, Kon & Amir, Qool DJ Marv, Quantic & Ty over the years. This along with the Eyes Down/Subtub connections has led to a variety of gigs for Jon K outside of the Northwest including a recent appearance at Warm (Sonar Kollektiv), Scuba and regular trips to play Plastic People's Balance night with Abdul Forsyth. Jon's also resident desinger at Fat City Recordings - check his handy work on recent releases from the label such as John Robinson's 'The Leak Edition Vol 1' and Eric Lau's 'Dudley & Friends', with more to follow..... Eyes Down, launched on 15th September 2000 at Manchester's infamous Dry Bar as a weekly Friday featuring residents Jon K, Kelvin Brown, and Hosted by MC DRS (Broke'n'English) . After a couple of venue changes Eyes Down settled at the Band on the Wall venue with 150 years of musical history reverberating through its ageing walls. Predominantly a live jazz and roots venue it previously played hast to artists such as Tony Allen, Terry Callier, London Electricity, Courtney Pine, Poets of Rhythm, Antiballas, Eddie Palmieri, ACR and Attica Blues. Here Eyes Down developed an increasingly uncompromising music policy, focusing on individual and often challenging selections taking in Jazz, Cuban, Broken Beat, Hip Hop, Disco, House, Detroit Techno, Folk and Reggae. Previous guests at Eyes Down have included I.G. Culture, Waiwan, London Elektricity, Landslide, Recloose, Abdul Forsyth, Moodymann, ?uestlove (The Roots), Dego, Jazzanova, Pepe Bradock, Dobie, Mark Pritchard, Kyoto Jazz Massive, Charlie Dark and Domu. *Fat City Recordings Podcast* from our fuzzy friend Martin Brew* **************************************************************************** Martin Brew, Producer & DJ, began his journey in the early nineties as one half of Strangebrew releasing two albums and a handful of singles for Rob's Records, founded by the sorely-missed Rob Gretton, manager of New Order, and also home to Sub Sub (later to become Doves) and A Certain Ratio amongst others. It was a new sound and it was only with the simultaneous emergence of the likes of The Dust Brothers, Depth Charge and Red Snapper did some bright spark come up with the term "Trip Hop" and a new genre was born****** Moving quickly on, Martin teamed up with Martin Desai (engineer for the Twisted Nerve label) to form J-Walk. They released a series of 3 collectable 45rpm singles on the Pleasure label. ****** As a result, J-Walk signed to Eastwest and released the critically acclaimed but sorely-overlooked album "A Night On The Rocks", promoting it with support slots for Nightmares On Wax and Aim, playing at such venues as the Shepherd's Bush Empire, The Kentish Town Forum and Manchester's The Ritz, along with an appearance at Midem's "Best Of British" showcase in Cannes, along with Ladytron and David Holmes' Free Association ****** Along the way, J-Walk have lent their sound in remixing to Nitin Sawhney, Bebel Gilberto, Alfie, Rae & Christian, Baaba Maal, Kings Of Convenience and Only Child, as well as remixing Manuel Gottsching's much-sampled electronic classic "E2-E4"****** During this time Martin also managed to run the Fat City record shop for several years and contributed tracks to the Fat City Recordings label's acclaimed series of "Mystic Brew" compilations, most notably Sand Steppin, which has since appeared on mix compilations such as N.O.Ws "DJ KICKS" and Andy Smiths "Document" Vol.2. He has since followed this up with a solo album "No Room In The City For Big Hearts Like Ours", which featured guests such as The Nextmen, Riton, Rich Medina, Ambersunshower, and MC Wrec****** J-WALK IS NOW RECORDING A NEW ALBUM FOR THE PEACEFROG LABEL.
